We're thrilled to be once again involved with the Esquire Edit this year, in the fine company of some fantastic brands who all share the ethos of quality design. On the theme of 'autumn essentials', Oli didn't waste any time in coming up with an idea; something timeless, classic, warm, that transcends subcultures and can by worn by anyone just about anywhere. That item is the shawl collar cardigan.

Inherently preppy and collegiate, the shawl collar cardigan was forever a symbol of refined American masculinity, thanks in no small part to the likes of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, those menswear icons of the 70s who often wore it in some shape or form. But since then it has become a much more democratic piece of menswear, appropriated by punks, sartorialists, streetwear heads, you name it. But that's its very allure - versatile to the core, whether you dress like a 1950s Ivy League teacher or the lead in a 90s grunge band.
Oli decided to reference the classic cream style for this iteration for the Esquire Edit. Unlike some of the chunky styles of old, this version eschews the big wool weaves and opts for 100% organic cotton in a pearl and jersey stitch so that it drapes much more naturally. Horn buttons and two patch pockets give it that collegiate finish. The cream tone works really well with any autumnal colours, so think about pairing it with browns, greens, ochre, navy and the gamut of greys too. It's brilliant as a textural juxtaposition to fabrics such as corduroy and suede too.
