Oliver Spencer is pleased to announce the launch of the second season of our collaboration with Niwaki, the gardening tool and accessories brand founded by husband and wife team Jake and Keiko. After the amazing response to the first collection, Oli has introduced new elements to this follow-up, with hard-wearing denim smock shirts, gardening gilets, indigo-rinsed overshirts, and the hero piece - the Hortus Gardening Jacket - forming a stylishly functional capsule that is designed for hard work! Whether you’re in possession of green fingers or simply enjoy beautifully made utility wear of the highest fabrication standards, this collaboration is the perfect manifestation of both brands’ ethos.

“It was during lockdown, when we first started selling Niwaki tools, that it dawned on me that there are no great gardening clothes. Most of us just throw on old tees and jeans but they’re not really fit for purpose, so I joined forces with Niwaki to create a utilitarian, workwear-inspired capsule mostly made from rugged organic cotton that could take a battering in the garden but still look stylish. For this second season, we’ve honed the boxy silhouettes and added some new ergonomic pocket details to make the garments even more functional. Even if you’re not green-fingered in the slightest, the jacket and shirts are still beautiful additions to a modern workwear wardrobe.”
Fronting the capsule is the Hortus Gardening Jacket which has been constructed in a variety of hardwearing organic cotton cloths, including a tough ripstop, as well as soft cotton and recycled cotton indigo-rinsed denim, all made in England. It has been updated with side-entry rear pockets to make access that much easier. The five pocket front configuration that riffs on traditional chore jackets has been specifically designed to hold Niwaki’s small gardening tools, seed cartons, and so on. Beyond the garden, it provides a modern urban take on a classic utility silhouette.

“I wanted the jacket to have a boxy artist silhouette so that it’s comfortable when moving around and crouching down, but it also looks contemporary. We also added some small details, such as sturdy elastic on the front right pocket so that your gardening tools are more secure when you’re moving.”
The capsule also features a number of rugged shirt designs. The Ohana Smock Shirt is a collarless style with a two-button fastening and oversized patch pockets on the front with top stitch detailing, inspired by a traditional Japanese vintage gardening shirt.

The Haru Overshirt features a semi-hidden placket to ensure that the buttons don’t snag on flora and fauna, and features a curved hem and patch pocket on the right hand sleeve. It is constructed in a soft yet heavy duty ecological linen, hemp and cotton cloth, and doubles up as a fine piece of modern workwear when not in the garden. The Scion Gilets are made in England and follow the same five-pocket design as the Hortus Gardening Jacket, cut from an organic cotton cloth.
