If you've followed us for a while, you'll know by know that textural fabrics are at the very core of Oliver Spencer collections. The design process always begins with fabrics, and the more interesting the textures of those fabrics, the better. Mohair, which dates back to 13th-century Turkey, is a natural fibre that we love incorporating into our wool yarns as it offers a really unique flecked finish and a slightly fuzzy nap. Mohair is a luxurious, soft, and durable fibre made from the long, silky hair of the Angora goat, which is distinct from the Angora rabbit (used to make Angora wool). It's known for its distinctive sheen, lightweight warmth, and ability to hold vibrant dyes, resulting in a lustrous finish. Mohair fibres are naturally resilient, making them less prone to wrinkling or shrinking.
Magical Mohair
Production begins by shearing the Angora goat, typically twice a year, after which the fibres are cleaned, combed, and spun into yarn, but this season we've made a conscious effort to use recycled mohair which reduces our environmental impact. The fabric we've created is called Regent Navy, and it's actually one of the most sustainable wool clothes we've ever used. Not only is it comprised of recycled mohair, but it also made up of 60% recycled wool, 20% recycled polyester, and 5% other recycled fibres.
So that's the fabric background, what of the garments? Well although mohair is typically used in knitwear to give a bold fuzzy handle to wool cloths, we've used it to create three winter outerwear pieces - the Lambeth jacket, Arlington Bomber, and Big Coat - in the aforementioned Regent navy fabric. The Lambeth and Arlington are both short jackets, with the former leaning on a boxy blouson shape while the latter takes its design cues from traditional flight jackets. The Big Coat is as the name suggests - a big warm hug of a double-breasted winter coat. We made the navy tone quite light versus, say, a midnight hue, so it's slightly more casual and thus, versatile. The mohair gives it a flecked finish which really adds depth and contrast to the colour, while of course amping up the texture with its signature long fibres. Mohair is a great way to create a really warm-looking finish to your winter looks, adding a unique textural dimension.
